While Friends may seem pretty realistic since it has no monsters, laser swords, or aliens, it still has some things that don’t sit right with fans.

Summary:

  • Friends, despite its realistic nature, has some unrealistic aspects that fans find interesting.
  • One such issue is the excessive time characters spent together.
  • The producers have made it clear that they know about how unrealistic this part of the show is.

Now that we all already know about the fact that Monica inherited a flat from her grandmother (by the way, it is pointed out in the first episode), it seems like there are no more unrealistic things in this show. Yet, fans noticed that the whole group spends way too much time together.

If you have ever tried to go out with more than one friends, you know how difficult it can be to organize everything. Everyone has a different schedule and their own plans. Yet somehow, for the main characters of Friends it wasn’t a problem. Five people in their late-20s could spend almost all day together? Impossible.

And that is the most unrealistic part of the entire show. We can give a pass to Joey and Phoebe since they don't have traditional 9-5s, but what about Monica, Rachel, Ross, and Chandler?

At the beginning of the series, Rachel worked as a waitress and lived with Monica, so it’s obvious why she was either at the coffee shop or at the apartment. But Chandler always had an office job, and Monica was a chef.

There’s no way they could be at Central Perk all day long. Ross worked at the museum and also couldn’t participate in all-day drinking coffee. Moreover, until season 5, Ross didn’t live close to the rest of the group. So realistically, he wouldn’t go to another apartment for breakfast before work.

Monica’s schedule also makes no sense.

“I worked in restaurants for years and executive/head chefs often worked 12 hour days. She has WAY too much free time,” Redditor bigoldoinksinamish says.

However, the producers of the show made it very clear how unrealistic this whole thing was by hilariously breaking the fourth wall. In the episode 8, season 6, the group has a chat about why their bosses don’t like them, and that’s when Joey points out that the reason is that they are all hanging around at the coffee shop “at 11:30 on a Wednesday.

If you miss the iconic sitcom no matter how unrealistic it is, watch Friends on Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, or YouTube and Google Play Films.
