Fox Chief Drops Bombshell Update on Beloved Firefighting Procedural
This feels like a final goodbye.
Summary:
- 9-1-1 was one of Fox's top-rated shows from its early seasons through season 6, when the network canceled the show.
- Although 9-1-1 was saved and picked up by ABC for season 7, the spin-off 9-1-1: Lone Star has remained among the Fox shows.
- Now, with Fox still refusing to give an update on the show's future beyond season 5, fans are worried that it may be the last.
Even though 9-1-1: Lone Star has only been on Fox for 4 seasons, it already has quite a few fans, some of whom even prefer the spin-off to the original show. Just as flawless from a production standpoint, many people find Lone Star lighter and easier to watch than the tragedy-filled original 9-1-1.
While Fox has promised to deliver the show's delayed fifth season in the fall of 2024, fans of the show were still left feeling uneasy. With the network already canceling the original show, it was only a matter of time before the bad news would hit the Lone Star spinoff. Unfortunately, it looks like that time has come.
Why Was 9-1-1 Canceled on Fox?
One of the main reasons Fox decided to cancel its most popular procedural was the high cost of production. In order to make each emergency believable, the show has to spend a lot of money on sets, graphics, cinematography, and stunt choreography. Before the announcement, fans believed that it was all worth the profit Fox was making from the show.
9-1-1: Lone Star, although set in Austin, Texas, and with a much lighter vibe, doesn't differ too much production-wise. The show still focuses on the work and personal lives of the first responders, so every expense item still applies to this show.
While some fans hoped that 9-1-1: Lone Star would be much easier for Fox to produce now that the original 9-1-1 is gone, others didn't believe their rose-colored glasses and prepared for the cancellation. Still, the penny is in the air, according to Fox boss Rob Wade.
“We are excited about the new season. We’re going to see how that goes as always, and then make decisions on that about the future of that franchise. But at the moment, we’re very focused on that being a launchpad for a new show, Rescue HI-Surf, we’re excited to have it on the schedule,” he said.
All in all, it feels like the moment season 5 is done with launching Fox's new lifeguard show, it will be cut just like 9-1-1 was. The only problem is that there is no guarantee that ABC will be waiting to pick up the spinoff and save it from complete cancellation.
Still, there's a whole new season to look forward to, and if you're a fan of 9-1-1: Lone Star, you won’t want to miss it. So keep an eye out for more news and behind-the-scenes updates, and be the first to know the official premiere date.
