Former 'Bond Girl' Bashes Modern Political Correctness: 'We Had More Fun'
Britt Ekland, Roger Moore’s “Bond Girl,” reflects on how the franchise has changed — and she can’t help but notice how the improved working conditions… killed the fun!
If you’ve ever watched the James Bond movies that came before Daniel Craig ’s latest interpretation, you could surely notice quite a lot of differences with the modern version of Agent 007.
We’re not talking about the quality of the picture, too: the thing is, the role of women in the franchise has changed rather dramatically.
Back in the day, female leads were needed for one sole reason: wear bikinis, look stunning, and highlight how cool James Bond was. The so-called “Bond Girls” were attributes to the Agent rather than actual characters, and they were treated as such.
This trend has been going on for decades before it finally died off in this century.
Britt Ekland was one of the Bond Girls for Roger Moore’s Agent 007: she played his secretary in 1974’s The Man with the Golden Gun.
Ekland was a sex symbol on the rise back then, and coupled with her recent appearances in other movies, she booked the role of Moore’s Bond Girl… To vibe around in a bikini the entire time.
Still, while reflecting on the way the franchise has changed over the past half a century, Britt Ekland can’t help but notice the negative effects of the modern “political correctness”: the actress states that while it definitely improves women’s standing in the industry, it also made the overall experience way less fun than it used to be.
“There are no more Bond girls, they are Bond women today. They have it with the political correctness and the #MeToo, they have a much better time than we had. But I don’t think that the end product is as fun as ours were, because we were pretty and we had good bodies and we didn’t try to look sexy, we just were,” shared Ekland.
The former Bond Girl is not sure whether she agrees with such a trade-off as she doesn’t seem to approve of how sensitive the world has become — but on the other hand, she realizes that the changes brought a better working environment for the new generation of female leads.
“Today, everything is so, ‘Don’t do that because that will upset that side.’ We didn’t have any of that. We just went out there, we were always in a bikini and all these people are fully dressed, very typical, but it was a job and we did it. So, I think today the Bond women have it – from a political correctness point of view – in a much better position. But I think we had more fun,” explained the actress.
The debates on the modern approach to political correctness are nothing new and people have polar opposite opinions on it, but at least when it comes to the James Bond movies, we are sure that upgrading Bond Girls to Bond Women definitely did wonders for the complexity and appeal of their characters… Even if it cost a bikini or two.
