Forgotten Old Western Gem Deserved So Much More Than Just 2 Seasons
Two seasons were so not enough!
Westerns are experiencing a renaissance as more and more viewers are tuning into movies and shows of the genre. With the wild popularity of Yellowstone and other Costner movies, there’s no way that there are many people left who haven’t checked out the genre.
That’s why now is the right time to remind the audience of some underrated and forgotten gems that used to be on air many years ago, and were even loved by the public. As you may know, the late 60’s was one of the best eras in terms of western premieres, and it’s about time we revisit this particular one.
The series we want to talk about is F Troop, a comedy-western show which lasted for two seasons and then was canceled, and no, not because it wasn’t well-received by the audience or had low ratings.
What Is F-Troop About?
F Troop aired on ABC from 1965 to 1967 and got its name as a pun on the misadventures of an army outpost at Fort Courage in the 1860s.
The story centers on Captain Wilton Parmenter, played by Ken Berry, who oversees the post and got his job after "successfully" leading a cavalry charge to victory after accidentally heading in the wrong direction and basically just getting lucky.
It was actually an outstanding Western, and it's a shame it had such a short life. The characters of the series were fun and quirky, as it also followed a slick con man in Sergeant Morgan Sylvester O'Rourke, and a slightly dumb buddy, Corporal Randolph Agarn.
At the center of the Western was an unlikely tool for the genre: it was mainly character-driven and had a great touch of physical comedy. Viewers were absolutely stunned by the premise and the perfect writing of the shoe, but for various reasons the show was canceled after the second season.
Fans still don't know why their favorite show was canceled, but there are some rumors. One of them is that production was halted due to cost and resources. The first season of the show was in black and white, and then it switched to color for the second season, and that was costly.
F Troop is a stand out in the genre, so if you feel like you need a lighter Western watch than Yellowstone, try out this Western series on Prime.
