Forget The Gentlemen, Law & Order Creator Just Dropped the Best True Crime Docuseries on Netflix
No fiction can compare to real-life horrors.
No matter how many crime TV shows and law enforcement procedurals you have watched, there is no way the fictional characters can compare with any of the headlines from the real-life local papers. People are cruel, and the crimes they sometimes commit leave the whole communities devastated and speechless.
However, some of them aren’t that easy to catch and bring back to justice. Teams work tirelessly to ensure the criminals get caught and answer for what they’ve done to the face of law. It’s these people who deserve the most praise and recognition for each successful case.
If you are tired of your favorite crime dramas becoming soft and soapy and need to see some real action and experience a long-forgotten thrill of trying to capture the most notorious of criminals, Netflix got you covered.
Is Homicide: New York Worth Watching?
Not to be confused with New York Homicide, a docuseries that premiered in 2022 and explored roughly the same topic, Homicide: New York is Dick Wolf's first foray into the world of streaming platforms. Created in partnership with Netflix, Homicide: New York is a 5-episode study of a criminal life in the Big Apple.
Skipping the more mundane cases that NYPD cops deal with on a daily basis, the show takes on five of the city's most gruesome events, diving as deep into the past as the 1997 stabbing of a man in Central Park. The top-notch expertise of the professionals who worked on these cases is put under the spotlight.
Knowing Dick Wolf's work, one wouldn't be too surprised to see the law enforcement structure portrayed in an entirely positive light in his projects, but the detectives will be the first to admit if they think they could have done more in these particular cases. This adds a refreshing layer of self-reflection and honesty that is unusual for such series.
Fans of the genre will be happy to know that Homicide: New York won't be the only project Dick Wolf is releasing as part of his partnership with Netflix. Following the premiere of the East Coast-focused true crime drama, the Homicide series will take a cross-country journey to Los Angeles on the West Coast, so keep an eye out for that one as well.
If you're ready to put Law & Order on pause and turn your attention to something darker, grittier, and a whole lot more exciting, you should definitely tune in to Homicide: New York docuseries, available for streaming on Netflix starting March 20.
