Family secrets, a mysterious murder, and suspicious relatives? Give us two!

Today, viewers are not given a break between horror releases – it is the most fruitful genre of the current year. The Longlegs buzz has just died down as another occult horror, no less impressive in terms of its score (96% on Rotten Tomatoes), hits screens – Oddity.

And Oddity is a perfect title for this flick – this is the most appropriate word when trying to describe the horror made by the Irishman Damian Mc Carthy.

There is an incomprehensible murder, there is a place for ghosts, everything happens in an old house surrounded by rough stone walls – the action takes the viewer to a psychiatric hospital, then to the aforementioned house, where the main character falls into a trance and brings a grotesque mannequin to life.

What is Oddity About?

Blind occultist Darcy loses her twin sister after she is murdered in a country house. Authorities believe the killer is a patient at a local mental hospital where the deceased's husband worked.

However, the prime suspect is soon found dead as well. Darcy decides to solve the case herself, using a creepy wooden doll and her occult skills. She goes to the house of her murdered sister's husband, where he lives with a new lover.

Oddity Does a Great Job of Making You Feel Uncomfortable

The main thing about Oddity is not so much the plot, but the unfriendly mystical atmosphere, the very breath of the movie, wafting with delusions, superstitions, and total mistrust – and from the latter the film's central topic is formed.

Should we trust a stranger knocking at the door and his warnings? And a male psychiatrist who, as if nothing had happened, creates a new family after the death of his wife? Is it possible to restore at least a small fraction of justice when all the answers are buried in the realm of the supernatural?

Much of Oddity's success lies in the director's vision, which gradually draws the viewer into the landscape of Irish horror. The movie plays with space and light in an unpredictable way, stretching the nerves like strings as it builds an emotional bridge between the characters, the husband and the sister.

The interior of the house – not the most friendly and almost completely closed off from the outside world – also contributes to this.

Oddity Has Its Own Tilda Swinton

The frightening effect of Oddity would not have happened if the movie had not become an unconditional benefit for Carolyn Bracken, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Tilda Swinton. Not only did she play two roles (two sisters – alive and dead), but she also filled the movie with two opposing actions, mixing a cold mind with the power of intuition.

Oddity can not be called a new page in horror, but if you are a fan of the occult genre, then this movie is for you – it is a portal to the uncomfortable world of maniacs, demonic creatures and creepy family secrets.

Where to Watch Oddity?
