Forget Homeland, HBO Max Drops Its Perfect Replacement in April
With Robert Downey Jr.’s multiple-role appearance as a pleasant bonus.
Summary:
- HBO is releasing a new spy series that many of Homeland’s fans will possibly appreciate.
- The show stars Sandra Oh and Robert Downey Jr. who portrays several different characters at a time.
- The actor’s strong dramatical performance may become the next big moment of his career after the win at the Oscars this year.
As one of the most anticipated series of the year is about to come to HBO Max already on April 14, it may draw attention of some who are fascinated by entangled spy dramas like Homeland.
The Sympathizer also seems to be a quite luring offer thanks to a star-packed cast that includes Sandra Oh, famous for her role in another spy drama Killing Eve, and Robert Downey Jr. who here takes up several roles simultaneously.
What Will The Sympathizer Be About?
The Sympathizer is directed by Park Chan-wook and based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name. The plot explores the life of a half-Vietnamese, half-French communist spy who goes under the nickname Captain who, during the last days of the Vietnam War, is exiled to the United States.
There, living among South Vietnamese refugees and trying not to show it that much, he keeps spying on the community while also reflecting on his drastic life changes.
Though one and only trailer for the upcoming series was released about a month ago, fans are still not over Robert Downey Jr. 's looks in there — as many in the comment sections admitted, they wouldn’t have recognised the actor if it hadn’t been for the captions below.
Is Robert Downey Jr. Heading to a New Milestone?
Seems like Downey Jr. has gone through a rapid change of image after his Oscar-winning role in Oppenheimer — and all chances are in here for him to aspire to the next Emmy awards. After analyzing only the trailer itself, fans counted at least 5 of different roles that the actor portrays — from a congressman and a Hollywood film director to a CIA agent.
As Downey Jr.’s career is gaining its momentum right now with the actor preferring to take up more serious dramatical roles after his path as Tony Stark in the MCU, another big win at the next awards season won’t come as a surprise.
