At the end of 2023, the whole world closely followed Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a victim of Munchausen syndrome, who was released from prison on parole after a sentence of 7 years.
The story of a girl, who was involved in her abusive mother’s violent murder, was told in the Lifetime documentary series The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, which rekindled people’s genuine interest in real-life crime stories.
Next month, Netflix is going to present another movie of the same genre, telling a story which can easily compete with Blanchard’s. Their events, to be more precise, the true events featured in both documentaries, share the same leitmotif - they’re both about the extreme expression of protest to their parents’ overprotective behavior.
The upcoming true crime starts with a 911 call, which happened in 2010 in Ontario, Canada. A young woman, Jennifer Pan, reported she was at home with her parents, when some criminals broke into their house and started to menace them demanding money. According to her initial words, they tied her up, shot both of her parents, killing Pan’s mother and seriously wounding her father, and ran away after that.
What Really Happened to Jennifer Pan’s Family?
Despite the fact that Jennifer was the one to observe the tragic events, soon enough her testimony began to fall apart, which was eventually proved by the evidence of her father, who then recovered from a coma.
It turned out that the daughter hired her acquaintances, who were involved in an illegal business, including her drug dealer boyfriend, to perform an act of revenge to her seemingly abusive parents.
This jaw-droppingly shocking story is going to be featured in Netflix’s 90-minute documentary titled What Jennifer Did, directed by Jenny Popplewell, famous for her 2020 true crime doc movie American Murder: The Family Next Door.
The film raises the topics of complicated child-parent relationship, family lies, hanging out with criminals and to what tragedies it all may lead.
The personality of Jennifer Pan is a well-known one for people following true crime stories, and, surprisingly, the Internet’s attitude towards her is not so straight-forward as it may seem.
The documentary, exploring what Jeniffer really did and why this story can be considered controversial, is scheduled to be released on April 10.
