We all hoped there will be more for his character.

Summary:

  • Fool Me Once is a Netflix limited series thriller based on the novel of the same name by Harlan Coben.
  • One of the characters in the show, Shane, despite being the best friend of the protagonist, acted suspiciously, but nothing came of it.
  • According to the author of the novel, Shane's behavior was nothing more than an attempt to protect Maya.

Netflix's new mystery thriller series Fool Me Once has swept the internet like a tsunami, leaving social media abuzz with various reviews, screencaps and, of course, memes. Whether you enjoyed the show or found it too hard to follow, there is one thing you can probably agree on.

Fool Me Once successfully fooled its viewers with Shane's suspicious behavior and left them with nothing but confusion. The more Maya trusted Shane and involved him in her investigation, the more viewers thought there was something wrong with him and yet nothing was explained.

To clear up the rest of the confusion, here's everything we know about Fool Me Once's Shane and his mysterious behavior during the show.

Did Shane Betray Maya In Fool Me Once?

Fool Me Once was certainly full of unexpected twists and turns, but Shane turning out to be a good guy was the biggest surprise of them all.

Those viewers who binge-watched the show were sure that he would be revealed as a traitor, working for the Burketts or having his own ulterior motives. But that wasn't the case.

From planting the tracker on Maya's car to showing up at her house and waiting for her to return, Shane's behavior walked the fine line between protective friend and obsessive stalker.

Up until the very end, viewers couldn't figure out his deal, but the author of the original book, Harlan Coben, was happy to share his point of view.

In response to a fan's question on X (formerly known as Twitter), Coben said the following:

“You’re military police. Your best friend suffers PTSD. She is taking medication, lying to you, lost two close family members to murders, has you test a bullet — and says she’s seeing her dead husband. You might want to (track) keep an eye on her and her little girl…”

While the desire to protect Maya is understandable, the way the show went about it still seems a bit excessive, to say the least.

Of course, the mysterious circumstances surrounding her were a good enough reason to worry and make sure she was safe at all times, but that urge could probably have been satisfied without maniacal behavior.

Although Shane's storyline was confusing to the vast majority of fans, it did not ruin the overall impression of the show's mysterious history. If anything, it only added a sense of constant suspense to most of the scenes.

Unfortunately, since Fool Me Once was always intended to be a limited series, there is no talk of a season 2. However, if you feel the need to watch it again, the show is available on Netflix.
