Fleabag Star Confirmed Working On Amazon Tomb Raider TV Series
Phoebe Waller-Bridge will write and produce the new adaptation, and fans are hoping that the third time will be the charm.
The Tomb Rider video game series has had an impressive number of failed (or at least rather underwhelming) movie adaptations, with two films in the early 2000s starring Angelina Jolie and a 2018 reboot starring Alicia Vikander, perhaps only paling in comparison to the Resident Evil games.
And earlier this year, it was announced that another attempt to adapt the adventures of Lara Croft was in the works, this time in the form of a TV series from Amazon, and a recent update revealed a promising new addition to the crew.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known for the acclaimed comedy-drama TV series Fleabag, which she created, wrote and starred in, confirmed in an interview with IGN that she is involved in the production of the upcoming show.
Waller-Bridge revealed that she will be a writer and executive producer on the series, saying that it will be a "perfect final step" in her involvement with franchise projects such as Indiana Jones and James Bond, which she has previously worked on.
Phoebe intends to use that experience as she has learned a lot about all the "adventure stuff" and hopes to translate it "perfectly [and] seamlessly" into Tomb Raider.
Fans are willing to give the new project a chance, especially after the excellent Fleabag, even if Tomb Raider doesn't really feel like TV show material at the moment.
However, her sources of inspiration seem to be in the right place, as the games have always been heavily inspired by Indiana Jones and to a lesser extent James Bond (as Lara hasn't been exploring ancient ruins all the time, take the Tokyo level from 2006's Tomb Raider: Legend), so fans are hoping that it will end up being good.
The project is currently in the early stages of development, so no plot summary, cast or release date has been announced.
