Finn Wolfhard Accidentally Spills Tea on Stranger Things Spinoff Idea

With the level of popularity that Stranger Things has, showrunners have to be extremely secretive in order not to spill the beans earlier than needed — and sometimes that means hiding things from your own crew. Well, it doesn't work with Finn Wolfhard, who portrays Mike Wheeler on the show, at all.

During his appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, the Stranger Things star revealed that the crew is actually incredibly secretive about the upcoming season 5. According to Wolfhard, even the title of the first episode, The Crawl, was a mystery for him until just recently.

However, sometimes you don't even need to be confided in, as Wolfhard appeared to have the same idea for a Stranger Things spinoff that the Duffer brothers had. The actor revealed that during Stranger Things 4 filming, they joked about how in 20 years, "they all are going to have us back, we're going to be fat and old."

"And then I was like, 'Oh but if you guys are actually gonna do a spinoff, it should be this', and the Duffers looked at each other, and they looked at me, and they were like, 'Could we talk to you for a second?'" Wolfhard recalled.

It turns out that the Duffers had the exact same idea and even thought that someone told it to Wolfhard. According to the actor, they asked him not to tell anyone, but it looks like the idea is no longer a secret, because Wolfhard shared it with the entire audience of The Tonight Show.

In an earlier interview with Variety, the Duffer brothers confirmed they are working on a Stranger Things spinoff, but refused to disclose any details about it, only noting that it will be something "very, very different."

"But somehow Finn Wolfhard — who is one crazy smart kid — correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!" the Duffers told the outlet at the time.

Well, looks like the "no one else knows" line did not age well, and it looks like the spinoff will somehow be connected with the Hawkins gang story and might potentially be involve a time-jump into the future. However, Wolfhard did not provide any additional details — apparently trying not to spoil things even more.

Stranger Things season 5 will become the final one for the original show, with the premiere date yet to be announced by Netflix.
