Final Game of Thrones Scene is Much Deeper Than You Probably Thought
In that now infamous final scene of Game of Thrones, there was no real explanation given as to why Drogon torched the Iron Throne – or what he did with Dany's body after he flew off with it.
But following comments made by David Benioff, and by taking a closer look at the bond between the Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon, we can say with some certainty that both were an act of love for Dany by the mighty beast.
Drogon, as we know, was an aggressive and spirited dragon named after Dany's one true love, Khal Drogo. He is believed by some to be the reincarnation of Balerion (The Black Dread) although this is never confirmed. At times, Dany had trouble controlling Drogon. But there was no doubting his loyalty towards his 'mother'.
When she was ambushed at Daznak's Pit in Meereen by the Sons of the Harpy in season 5, for example, it was Drogon who swooped into the pit to rescue her. And despite his aggressive demeanour, Drogon is capable of showing affection and mourning. He cried out in anguish when his two siblings were killed. And he did the same when finding Dany's body after Jon Snow had killed her.

But if you thought what was followed was nothing more than a massive dragon temper tantrum, think again. It's been mooted on some social channels that Drogon flew off with Dany's body because he intended to eat her. But Benioff says this was absolutely not the case. And he pointed to the gentle way in which the dragon was nudging her lifeless body as evidence of this.
Despite his anger, frustration and loss, Drogon was still very much in control of his actions. And this is a crucial moment in establishing what happened to Dany's corpse.
And why Drogon destroyed the Iron Throne? Dany's death spelt the end of the Targaryen dynasty, dragons had been loyal to the family for generations, and Drogon had been present alongside Dany as she fought to control the Seven Kingdoms.
So, as Benioff says, it was a case of, if Dany isn't going to sit on the Iron Throne "no one's going to sit on it." It was an act of defiance, not unfettered rage. And that leads us to conclude that what he did next, was to fly Daenerys Targaryen to her final resting place and cremate her in line with Targaryen tradition.
