The TV adaptation of William Gibson's novel of the same name was unceremoniously canceled after just one season, although it was initially renewed for a second one.

The Peripheral TV series was highly anticipated by many cyberpunk fans, simply because it is based on the book of the same name by William Gibson, one of the pioneers of the genre.

There have been a few attempts to adapt his works to the big screen over the years, such as 1995's Johnny Mnemonic, starring Keanu Reeves, and 1998's New Rose Hotel, starring Christopher Walken and Willem Dafoe.

However, their reception was mixed, to say the least, so when a TV adaptation of his 2014 novel The Peripheral, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, was announced, fans of the author held their breath, wondering if the third time would be the charm.

Their hopes were not in vain, as the first season of the series, while not perfect, was a good adaptation that was praised by critics, general audiences, and fans of the original.

Sadly, it seems that the happiness was short-lived, as a new devastating update on the show reveals that The Peripheral has been canceled, despite having previously been renewed.

According to Variety, the show was canceled due to the ongoing Hollywood strikes, as even if season 2 production had started soon, it wouldn't have been released until 2025.

Fans are completely devastated by the news, calling the decision incredibly stupid, as for many of them, The Peripheral was one of the few good shows on Amazon Prime Video that kept them on the streaming service.

Considering that season one only covered half of the original novel, they were eagerly anticipating the next one, but now it seems that the story will remain unfinished forever.

Others say that Chloë Grace Moretz's streak of bad luck continues, as her career has been quite bumpy in recent years, and as soon as she joined a great TV series, it was canceled after just one season.

Hopefully, the next adaptation of the works of one of the founders of the cyberpunk genre will avoid the grim fate of its predecessors.

Although, considering all this, it might be better to leave William Gibson's novels alone for good.

Do you agree that The Peripheral deserved better?
