Fans Unsure If John Wick Franchise Even Needs Another Movie After That Chapter 4 Ending
Despite the positive response from the director, some fans believe that there is no need to milk the franchise.
Following the recent release of John Wick: Chapter 4, the film received overwhelming critical acclaim, earning an astounding 95% rating from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
It also grossed $73.5 million in its opening weekend, making it the best opening of the entire franchise.
The fifth installment of the film series was confirmed to be in development alongside Chapter 4 in August 2020, with Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane set to reprise their roles.
However, after the end of the fourth movie, fans are wondering if the sequel is even necessary. Warning: major spoilers ahead.
At the climax of the film, John faces off against Marquis Vincent de Gramont, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, who switches places with Caine for the fourth round of the duel.
Although John manages to kill de Gramont, he eventually succumbs to his wounds from the previous rounds and appears to die on the steps of the church.
In the end, Winston Scott (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) bury him next to his wife Helen, who died of cancer before the events of the first film.
However, the film's director, Chad Stahelski, recently spoke positively about the future of the franchise.
"As for John Wick, you will never [hear] Keanu or I say, we're done. We're proud of what we've done, flattered people want to see more, and we want to continue that and will be there to help out. What Lionsgate decides to do with the properties is up to them," said the director in an interview with Deadline.
Fans are unsure of the wisdom of forcing the franchise to continue after such a satisfying (and tragic) conclusion.
"The franchise concluded beautifully. They shouldn't milk it. There are many other tangential worlds in John Wick to explore. Let them bow out in glory," Reddit user AngelVirgo said.
Others say that if the creators could maintain the same level of quality, they would love to see more of their favorite assassin on screen.
It is also possible that John will appear in spin-offs, such as the upcoming prequel TV series about the Continental Hotel.
