That rare time when the streaming giant had zero promo for a new arrival, yet in this case it also makes zero sense.

Netflix keeps unveiling huge surprises for its viewers by unexpectedly dropping big hits on its platform, and sometimes such surprises aren’t perceived in a very positive way.

Last weekend, the streaming had two major releases at the same time adding Takashi Yamazaki’s last year bombshell Godzilla Minus One and Takashi Miike’s high-rated horror movie Lumberjack the Monster.

Neither of them had previously received some kind of promotion from Netflix’s part, though Godzilla Minus One had no questions about this from the audience. Ironically, the same can’t be said about Lumberjack the Monster.

Upon its arrival at Netflix several days ago, the film made no real noise and just quietly landed on the platform unnoticed until someone posted a comment in the social media saying they’d discovered Lumberjack the Monster in the streaming’s collection by pure accident.

Other users were quick to get involved in the heated discussion slamming Netflix for giving zero ad for its exciting new arrival and pointing out to the streaming’s ugly strategy to ignore brilliant flicks that potentially will get no hype compared to plain, yet most-watched romcoms or reality shows.

On X, the streaming got a portion of hatred even from American filmmaker Ted Geoghegan who wrote:

“LUMBERJACK THE MONSTER, Takeshi Miike’s long-awaited return to straight-up horror, dropped on Netflix a few days ago without any fanfare or notification whatsoever. Because why hype the latest title from one of the genre’s most beloved, brilliant, and prolific filmmakers?”.

Lumberjack the Monster comes as Takashi Miike’s highly anticipated return to the horror genre ten years later since the Japanese director released his last eerie film titled As the Gods Will.

Based on the 2019 Mayusuke Kurai’s novel of the same name, Lumberjack the Monster follows relentless lawyer Akira Ninomiya who embarks on a full-scale revenge after being attacked by a masked serial killer.

The movie was initially released in 2023 and became a critical darling landing scores of 80% and 40% from critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lumberjack the Monster can now be streamed on Netflix.
