Fans Fear Shorter Season 1 Spells Doom For The Winchesters
Do we need to get worried or to keep carrying on no matter what?
With Supernatural seasons usually going for 23 episodes, fans were expecting the prequel to consist of at least as many episodes. However, according to Deadline, The CW did not order more episodes for Jensen Ackles-led The Winchesters, as well as for Jared Padalecki 's Walker: Independence.
This means that The Winchesters will only have 13 episodes in the first season. But most importantly, there is no decision on season 2 yet — something that has already prompted concerns in the Supernatural fandom.
People are clearly not ready to say goodbye to the Supernatural universe after it has just returned to their screens with the John and Mary prequel. The news is worrying because, as noted by Deadline, both Walker: Independence and The Winchesters did good in terms of rating by The CW standards, so "full seasons for both shows would have been a no-brainer".
Still, there has been no decision to renew neither of the shows. But Supernatural fans are not easily giving up.
"This isn't a bad thing, it just means they aren't getting extra episodes. Which again isn't bad and I think 13 episodes is better overall for the show. We just need to keep supporting TW," Redditor Coleyb23 said.
But many others are already mentally preparing themselves to bid adieu to The Winchesters after season 1. This would be sad for a lot of people, because it seems that the show has exceeded expectations of many critics, and Supernatural fans, even the most skeptical ones, were ready to give the prequel a chance even despite retconning fears.
However, it's worth remembering that The Winchesters has not been cancelled, and that is already good news. With the fandom being supportive enough, the show can prove itself renewal-worthy and secure another season, given that it is a part of a hugely popular The CW franchise.
The Winchesters airs on The CW on Tuesdays, with episode 4 having arrived on November 1.
