Fans Doubt The Winchesters Will Get Another Season
The Winchesters, a prequel to Supernatural, tells a story about Dean and Sam's parents.
Right now, it only has one season which is yet to release its final episode, so it could be pretty early to judge if the show will get a green light for season 2… But many viewers already highly doubt it.
In a Reddit discussion, fans voiced their concerns about season 2 and stated they'd be surprised if the series got to continue. They also named quite a few good reasons for that.
Falling ratings
Ratings are crucial for showrunners. It doesn't matter how much some particular groups of fans love the show: if it has low ratings, it will be canceled. Unfortunately, The Winchesters ' ratings have only been falling since the pilot episode.
Strong competition
There's too much focus on characters from the original series: the entirety of season 1 is teasing Dean's return, then Rowena comes back…
It forces fans to compare the two shows, and so far The Winchesters loses big time in this comparison.
Negative feedback
While some fans say the show "can be interesting to watch", others call it straight-up bad and don't see the point of it. For us, it was rather difficult to find strong arguments on why the series is good: there's just too much negative feedback on it.
Network priorities
As one of the commenters said, CW wants "more news, reality, and cowboy hats", and The Winchesters can't be their priority now. Add to that the fact it was recently bought by Nexstar, and the situation becomes even more complicated.
Budget issues
The new head of scripted television at CW set the production budget cap of one million dollars per episode.
The Winchesters heavily relies on CGI, so it's highly unlikely that they'll fit in that budget — and the shows that won't can be canceled.
However, it's still too early to make any serious assumptions. Considering how big the Supernatural 's fanbase is, The Winchesters has time to adapt and attract that very same audience back — even those who already got disappointed.
And the possible comeback of Dean Winchester in the season 1 grand finale next week can make the ratings skyrocket!
