Sex and the City has always been considered a women-oriented series, but what if it’s not?

Sex and the City was a phenomenon – a sexual awakening for women around the world if you will – and one of the most relatable shows about women and their dating lives in the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, people tend to forget that this hit series was created and run by two openly gay men – Darren Star and Michael Patrick King.

One Reddit user reminded fans about that fact and shared their groundbreaking theory about the true perception of the four main characters in Sex and the City.

First of all, the show was not written through a female gaze – women certainly were a part of the writers room, but the two main creators were still men. Secondly, the fan suggested that the gang was basically a representation of how gay men saw the world and the people in it.

Samantha, the most free-spirited of the four, is a stereotypical gay man (and a main character). This actually makes sense when you remember any gay characters from the 2000s media, and they are all just like Samantha – don’t mind sleeping around, are brutally honest, and have that certain inner charm about them.

Miranda is a lesbian written by gay men, which also rings true, especially if you take into account the character’s story arc in the revival show And Just Like That… Miranda was always too good to be true, kind of?

Charlotte is a conservative written by gay men. Saying that Charlotte is old-fashioned and set in her ways is like saying nothing – that is one of her most distinctive personality traits, which usually gets in her way of happiness.

Finally, Carrie is how gay men see straight women (annoying, wearing rose-colored glasses, and choosing all the wrong men?). Carrie’s dating struggles speak for themselves, so this characterization may be quite right.

There you have it, folks. Sex and the City has always had a diverse audience, and gay men constitute a huge part of it. Now we finally know why!
