Fan Theory Suggests The Worst Possible Ending for Avatar 2
Ending Avatar 2 on a cliffhanger – and making viewers wait for the threequel – would be incredibly frustrating for fans.
Avatar: The Way of Water set to be released in two weeks has been in development for years that felt like centuries to eager fans.
More than that, fans are frustrated about not knowing how many movies will follow the sequel. James Cameron revealed that the number of Avatar films will depend on the box office of Avatar 2. If the movie underperforms, the creator is ready to end the story with three installments instead of the previously announced five films.
Avatar 3 is already in production and set for release in December of next year. In the course of the 13-year hiatus between the first and second installments of the Avatar franchise, endless fan theories speculating about the possible plotlines of the sequels popped up all over the internet.
One of the theories revolves around the fact that Avatars 2 and 3 are being produced at the same time which means both movies could be based on one long script divided into two parts to each fit one film. The theory suggests that such a structure could give fans an unsatisfying ending for Avatar 2 finishing a movie on a negative note or with a cliffhanger.
As one fan described it on Reddit, if Titanic had been a two-parter, movie 1 would end on the massive cliffhanger of hitting the iceberg. What an annoying ending that would make for!
This is not uncommon for franchises that have a plan for a several-part story arc to end one of the installments with a shocking cliffhanger and make viewers wait for another year or two for the resolution. If done purely to get viewers hooked and make them return to cinemas for the continuation, cliffhangers may look like a cheap shot. The audience deserves a satisfying finish for their money and time spent.
While some fans are dreading an unsatisfactory ending to Avatar 2, others choose to put their trust in James Cameron.
"Well, I don't think it has to be another Deathly Hallows part 1 or Infinity War. Each of the Avatar movies is designed to be standalone and yet be part of the franchise. Which means the final events of each one don't necessarily need to depend on the next but still forward the story to the next. They are released in close proximity coz they are shot together," one of the fans explained.
