Taylor Sheridan’s latest creation, Special Ops: Lioness, has recently premiered, and people are not happy about how things have been turning out so far.

Sheridan, most known for his work on Yellowstone, has stepped away from the neo-Western genre and tried his hand at spy thrillers with Special Ops: Lioness. The show centers around Force Recon Marine Cruz Manuelos, who needs to establish contact with the daughter of a suspected terrorist.

Reddit fans have been complaining that the series puts too much focus on the family life segments, featuring the main characters, instead of keeping things epic with action sequences and all the other elements spy movies are known and loved for.

Some people find this show’s way of storytelling off-putting and even consider it false advertising because they don’t want to see people living their best luxurious lives in big mansions – they’ve signed up for an entirely different type of series. That may be true, but there is, of course, a “but” to all of this.

While Special Ops: Lioness, starring Laysla De Oliveira, Zoe Saldaña, and Nicole Kidman, may essentially be a spy thriller, the show is first and foremost a female empowerment story. Cruz, Aaliyah, Kaitlyn, Joe, and Kate are at the very center of the events unraveling in the series, and their personal life makes all the difference.

They are all powerful women who handle a variety of problems in their day-to-day life, and yet these issues are far from being the same due to the fact that all five are at different points in life and come from varied backgrounds.

Family scenes may not be the most fascinating to watch, but they provide the much-needed context to whatever is happening in the actual Special Ops storyline. Apart from that, those segments also help balance the characters out and slow down the pacing.

After all, Special Ops: Lioness is not your typical spy movie – in fact, it’s not a movie at all – where everything has to happen within two hours of screen time (and amid all the impressive explosions).

Hopefully, fans will finally see Special Ops: Lioness for the gem that it is, just in time for the release of episode 6 on August 20 on Paramount+.

Do you enjoy the family segments?
