Fallout Boss Wasn’t Ready for the Show’s Level of Detail: ‘Didn’t Even Fake Stacks of Papers!’
The sheer dedication of Fallout’s team shocked Todd Howard: on the set, the Bethesda CEO discovered just how bizarrely deep the preparations went.
Summary:
- Creators of Prime Video ’s Fallout TV show put a lot of effort into remaining faithful to the original video games.
- Apart from adding subtle references for OG fans, they went an extra mile by crafting things no one would ever see.
- Fallout boss Todd Howard shared that even random stacks of papers on the screen were authentic filled-in technical Vault reports.
One of the best things Prime Video’s Fallout has going for it in the eyes of OG fans is its immaculate attention to detail. The showrunners carefully implemented countless tiny bits of lore in their scenes and added many nods to the original games; while irrelevant for new viewers, their dedication paid off handsomely with the gaming community ’s praises. Even Todd Howard was impressed by the show’s faithfulness!
Fallout Boss Didn’t Anticipate Such Level of Detail
Even the most faithful adaptations tend to stick to what’s visible on the screen. It only makes sense, after all: why bother with something no one in the audience will never get a chance to appreciate? But that wasn’t the approach the Fallout team chose. They went all-in, crafting the bits and pieces that were literally never shown to us.
“You sit down and they have all the papers, and they have this note [to the Overseer] that no one will ever see that they had written. You have the stack of papers and you flip it over and they have the power report in the Vault and the food supply… I’m like, ‘You didn’t even fake the stack of papers!’” Todd Howard told Kinda Funny Games.
Fallout TV Show Made Sure to Include Everything
The authentic off-screen Vault reports are on a whole new (and ultimately bizarre!) level of faithfulness, and we can see why the Bethesda CEO was surprised when he saw them. But if anyone would have gone to such lengths for their series, it would be the showrunners of Prime Video’s Fallout, based on what we’ve seen so far.
While compelling video game adaptations are notoriously a pain in the bottom to create, the Fallout team carefully recreated the Wasteland as we know it from the games. They even included countless game references very few people would notice! That’s some serious dedication, so going an extra mile or ten makes sense when you remember the general effort these guys put into their series.
