10 Brilliant Video Game References in Fallout the TV Show
Prime Video made sure to tickle OG fans with subtle references to the Fallout games, and some of them are hilarious!
10. Stormtrooper Turrets from Fallout 1 & 2
When Siggi aka Doctor Wilzig was running away from the Enclave turrets, they somehow hit everything around him — but didn’t leave a scratch on the man himself. This underwhelming accuracy is a reference to the way turrets worked in the old games: they had a terribly low chance to hit their targets, and that saved Siggi.
9. Speech Checks from All Fallout Games
You’ve likely noticed that Maximus would often keep quiet for ages before replying; Lucy takes a moment to pick what to say — and their words would either completely win over the other person or fail miserably. That’s because in Prime Video ’s show, main characters have to go through Speech checks, just like in the original games!
8. Inventory Sounds from All Fallout Games
Fallout the TV show added a bunch of sounds from the source games, as well. For instance, the inventory sound: it can be best heard at the radio station as the fusion core was coming out of a pocket. It’s one of the not-so-subtle nods to the games, and trust us: there are a lot of sounds from the Fallout video games in the show.
7. VATS Activation Sound from Fallout NV, 3, & 4
Speaking of video game sounds, Fallout players couldn’t have noticed the VATS menu sounds during some gunfights. The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System is present in the TV show, too — and not only does it make the familiar sound but you can also see it: the slow motion in gunfight is the visual representation of VATS.
6. Mission Completed Sound from Fallout NV, 3, & 4
Seeing how there can be quite a few opinions about what can be considered quests and what should be called free-roaming in Prime Video’s Fallout series, the iconic “Mission Completed” bing sound wasn’t used too often — but if you want to hear it, return to the final scene with the “marriage certificate” and turn the volume up.
5. New Location Sound from Fallout NV, 3, & 4
Okay, this is the last sound-based reference, we swear. Have you heard the familiar noise when Lucy opened the door to the organ clinic or the gates of the observatory? If you did, it’s not you who was going insane: when the former dweller entered some new areas, she received a notification about it — just like in the video games.
4. Healing with Food Mid-Fight from Fallout NV, 3, & 4
Non-video game fans were likely confused when Cooper started eating up potatoes mid-gunfight, but the OGs knew exactly what was going on. Using food as healing items when in danger is the classic move, especially in Bethesda games; and Cooper calling them “cherry tomatoes” referenced their dominance in most games.
3. NPC Walk Cycles from Fallout 1 & 2
If you thought the farmer was walking in a weird way, you thought right: he has the same walk cycles as most NPCs (Non-Playable Characters) in the old Fallout games. As rumor has it, this was the farmer actor’s idea, so some of this attention to detail should be attributed to actors who actually played the Fallout games before.
2. Guns-Out Conversations from All Fallout Games
Speaking of the farmer, Lucy coming right up to him with her gun out and talking with the farmer while pointing the gun at him was… Questionable, wasn’t it? But that was just some good old Fallout games routing — most players never bother holstering their guns and talk to NPCs while effectively putting the barrel against their chests.
1. Kid in a Fridge from Fallout 4
This might just be the most obvious video game reference in the series, especially since Fallout 4 is the most mainstream of them all, but the kid in a fridge was a direct nod to the quest of the same name. In Fallout 4, the main character comes across a fridge with a ghoul child stuck inside of it and has to find a new family for him.
