Exact The Handmaid's Tale Moment When Fans Realized Just How Inhuman Fred Waterford Was
We knew all the time he was a jerk, but this scene just proved it.
Summary:
- Fred Waterford's twisted mind made him believe that he could force June to obey him.
- He is obsessed with June because he feels his power over her.
- The Handmaid's Tale season 6 will be its last.
The Handmaid's Tale is one of the darkest shows ever created. Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, the first season of the Hulu series was released in 2017 and became extremely popular. The disturbing reality in which the characters live is simply terrifying to viewers, but they can't help but wonder how the main heroine, June Osborne, will finally seek justice after her life was ruined.
As the name suggests, the series tells the story of a handmaid who ended up in this fictional totalitarian world called Gilead, and reveals all the harsh realities she and other handmaids went through. June ended up as a handmaid for the Waterfords. Fred and Serena are horrible people who are torturers and rapists, just like the rest of the Gilead elite.
In the first episode, we learn that they will do everything in their power to make the people around them miserable and persuade them that they are not worthy of a normal life. However, as we know, June is tough enough to not be broken by them. But in episode 13 of season 2, we learn that once again.
In this episode we witness Fred being delusional enough to offer June to stay with them in a more "permanent" position. Nichole was already born, so Fred wanted to father another child, better a boy. Many fans can't believe he was so ignorant and blind to his power to actually offer June something like that.
“He tells her she can stay in the house with HER daughter if she's obedient. That he could even arrange her to see Hannah more. Only if she obeys. It's just one of the biggest issues I've got with Fred. He's using June's children as leverage to keep her around as his personal fu** toy,” Redditor Disastrousdesigner93 said.
However, the fans were satisfied with the answer she gave him. June told him to mind his own business, but of course in different words. We were also happy to see her slap him again with all her passion and hate.
Why Is Fred So Obsessed With June?
Another question is exactly how twisted Fred’s mind is and why, after June ran away from him twice and made it absolutely clear that she doesn’t believe him and really hates him, he would still be crazy about her in a very disturbing way. Well, the fans believe the explanation of this one is actually simple.
“He wants to feel powerful and in control. He can do that with June. He gets a kick out of playing the "nice master" role by letting her play scrabble or giving her "fun" surprises like a night in a hotel or a brief meeting with Hannah, knowing that at any point he could take it all away from her,” Redditor dietcepheus said.
The Handmaid's Tale season 6 is about to be released in 2025. Production of the show has been delayed due to the writers' strike. The upcoming season will be the last for the series. Seasons 1 to 5 are available to stream on Hulu.
