Every Harry Potter Movie Sinned Against the Books, and Here’s How

No one is perfect, just like the cultish adaptations of the Harry Potter book series, as some aspects of the source got cut or reinvented in favor of the films’ spectacularity.

Here are eight of the most controversial changes each movie of the magic franchise made against the books.

1. The Sorcerer's Stone - The Devil’s Snare Scene Misinterpretation

The movie focused on the outstanding abilities of Hermione, thus changing the events of the book. In the source, it was Ron who reminded his friend to use magic to escape the Devil Snare. Disappointingly, the movie Ron was portrayed like a panicking coward.

2. The Chamber of Secrets - Sir Nicholas' Deathday Party is Cut

In the book, Harry is invited to Nearly Headless Nick's 500th Deathday party, which provides some more insight to the ghosts of Hogwarts. The movie fans never got to acknowledge their organizations and customs, as this scene was cut from the movie.

3. The Prisoner of Azkaban - Wormtail Fate is Unknown

At the end of the movie’s final battle, Peter Pettigrew aka Wormtail quietly escapes until later, but his disappearance and even his very ending in The Deathly Hallows remain mysterious, while in the book his final arc, including his death, are actually, you know, addressed. Such an indifference towards one of the pivotal movie’s characters seems questionable.

4. The Goblet of Fire - Reduction of Barty Crouch Jr's Story

Well, they do explain Barty Crouch Jr’s story a little bit in the end when everything is revealed. However, his whole complicated story about being imprisoned by his own father got entirely ignored (don’t tell us those 30 seconds in the Pensieve actually work as a backstory).

5. The Order of the Phoenix - Harry’s Breakup With Cho

The end of Harry’s love story with Ravenclaw’s Cho Chang is clearly simplified. Their separation is described in a more tragic way in the book, while the movie Cho is shown to reveal the truth about Dumbledore's Army to the Ministry, which ends their relationship.

6. The Half-Blood Prince - Absence of the Gaunt Family

By omitting every member of the house of Gaunt, Voldemort's mother’s side of the family, the screenwriters deprived fans of all chances to look at the villain’s past deeper, just like they did with Harry, who didn’t see these memories with the Pensieve.

7. The Deathly Hallows Part 1 - Removing Dudley’s Redemption

Many claims connected with the last chapters concern the removal of the scenes with the Dursleys. In particular, there was a moment showing Dudley’s softer side, as he expresses a modest respect towards Harry, which was eventually cut from the movie.

8. The Deathly Hallows Part 2 - Voldemort’s Controversial Death Scene

The final and, maybe, the biggest complaint is connected with the final Voldermort scene, in which he bursts into ashes after the duel with Harry. It didn’t serve as a sight of hope for people, who didn’t face the dead body of their tormentor in front of them.
