Even Quentin Tarantino Himself Admits This is His "Worst Movie"
Quentin Tarantino is among the most famous modern filmmakers, absorbing a wide range of influences and making numerous films, which present a diverse range of themes, plots and genres, while maintaining his unique style.
However, all men err and fail at times, and Tarantino is no exception. He admits that himself, too.
In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter he gave as part of their annual round table chat, Tarantino pointed out what he deems to be his worst cinematic failure: "Death Proof has got to be the worst movie I ever made".
As he explained, "to me, it's all about my filmography, and I want to go out with a terrific filmography..." And that was where Death Proof was weak.
Tarantino made it as his half of the 2007 double-feature film Grindhouse that he put together with Robert Rodriguez. But Rodriguez' Planet Terror was clearly the better part of that pair.
Death Proof is a black comedy thriller, starring Kurt Russell as a stuntman who murders young women with modified stunt cars he purports to be "death-proof".
The whole film is a homage to old splatter exploitation movies, sprinkled with nods to them, as well as to Kurt Russell's career.
The problem is, there is just not enough plot, action and meaningful content in Death Proof for its 113-minute running time, so a lot of that time is filled with long-winded and ultimately inconsequential dialogue.
While not a total disaster, as evidenced by its passable 66%/71% critic/audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes – though it might be argued that it was saved by being paired up with Planet Terror – Death Proof is just sort of plodding and, ultimately, boring, the last things one could have expected from Tarantino's homage to grindhouse films.
As Tarantino himself said: "for a left-handed movie, that wasn't so bad, all right? So if that's the worst I ever get, I'm good. But I do think one of those out-of-touch, old, limp, flaccid-dick movies costs you three good movies as far as your rating is concerned."
In all likelihood, he is right. Where there might be various unconvential opinions about quality of Tarantino's films, Death Proof is widely considered to be his worst creation.
