Even Hideo Kojima Bows to FX's Game of Thrones Successor as It Hits 9M Views

FX's Shōgun has been on the air for a little over a week, and it's already breaking some records. The show is a historical drama created by Rachel Condon and Justin Marks. The series is based on James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name.

The series is set in 17th century feudal Japan and tells the story of Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who meets the English pirate John Blackthorne during a political struggle with his rivals. The series is for the most part a fictionalized history of the rise of the Tokugawa shogunate, and Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Epic and historically accurate battle scenes draw comparisons to Game of Thrones. And that is something that the famous video game designer Hideo Kojima pointed out too.

“The scale, details, cast, costumes, sets, props, and VFX are all top-notch, and it is no exaggeration to say that this is a “Game of Thrones” set in 17th century Japan,” says Kojima in his lengthy Х post.

In the first week of Shōgun's premiere, episodes were watched by more than 9 million people worldwide on Hulu, Disney+, and Star+. This is the best world premiere for a scripted series from Disney General Entertainment (excluding Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar).

The series also earned the title of best streaming debut among FX series on Hulu, surpassing the previous record held by “Bear” (Season 2).

The new Shōgun show is not the first adaptation of the book. It had already been screened in 1980. The old Shōgun was awarded several times and received generally positive reviews from critics.

However, the 2024 version looks more authentic and shows the historical accuracy of feudal Japan. You can watch Shōgun on Hulu and Disney+.
