A lot of fans were caught completely off guard by this one and felt a total sense of second-hand embarrassment.

Grey's Anatomy episodes often vary in tone, from light and heartwarming to dramatic and tear-jerking, but one thing they rarely do is make fans of the show cringe.

This episode, however, does just that, and many fans have found it difficult to watch again during their rewatching of the series.

Song Beneath the Song, or Grey's Anatomy: The Music Event, is episode 18 of season 7 and, as the name suggests, it was an attempt at a musical episode.

A rather unsuccessful attempt, most fans say, as it felt completely out of touch with what was going on on screen and the rest of the show.

The seriousness and drama of the plot, with Callie being severely injured in a car accident and her colleagues fighting to save her life, is completely undermined by the silly-looking song breaks, which don't match the tension on screen at all.

And while Sara Ramirez has a great singing voice, the same can't be said for most of her co-stars, which only adds to the cheesiness of the episode.

Many fans admit that they were completely taken aback and embarrassed as soon as the singing started because they weren't expecting it at all.

However, it is not unanimously hated, as some fans found it good against all odds. They say that the reason might be in the chosen songs, but they still liked it.

Of course, it is a matter of taste, as musicals are definitely not for everyone.

But maybe it wasn't the best decision to make such a high stakes episode a silly musical, and the creators should have chosen something else, something more lighthearted.

Judging by what the fans say, if you can sit through more than five minutes of singing, or if you like the genre, this might be an enjoyable episode for you.
