Let’s do this sci-fi gem justice, 7 years later.

Presumably, the name of Elle Fanning is strongly connected with indie flicks of the 2010s in your mind. These include the horror hit The Neon Demon (2016) and Woody Allen-directed sweet romcom A Rainy Day in New York (2019).

However, there is an underrated 2010s gem that was unfairly forgotten since its release in 2017. Titled How to Talk to Girls at Parties, it actually deserves a rewatch.

The Story Behind How to Talk to Girls at Parties

Set in 1970s London, this movie starts by introducing us to Enn, a young punk who is surprisingly shy while getting acquainted with girls. When he meets the mysterious and rebellious Zan (played by Fanning) at a party, he initially hesitates, but then goes all in.

Unfortunately, the two aren’t seemingly meant to be together, as Zan comes from an alien planet whose race is a rival to humanity. It is only the girl and Enn’s feelings that can stop the lasting showdowns between their worlds and to set peace.

Is How to Talk to Girls at Parties Even Worth-Watching?

We bet you’re already interested in the premise of How to Talk to Girls at Parties, as it promises to blend science fiction, romance, comedy and action elements.

Stories about a person falling for an alien have always been loved by the audience, starting from Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich’s The Fifth Element to the Leela and Fry’s plotline in Futurama. If you’re a fan of such stories, you shouldn’t miss Fanning’s flick.

The movie doesn’t reinvent the genre, but still offers an entertaining sci-fi story, based on Neil Gaiman ’s 2006 eponymous novel. By adding some pretty good jokes and a catchy punk rock soundtrack, the filmmakers make it even more spectacular.

Back in 2017, it was both a commercial and critical failure, but nowadays it feels really fresh and worth-watching, while Elle Fanning’s Zan is certainly a memorable manic pixie dream girl of a character.
