Well, it's not like we hoped for anything else.

Summary:

  • Arcane, a Netflix animated show based on the League of Legends universe, has become the network's ultimate hit
  • Season 2 will be released in November 2024
  • According to Ella Purnell, who voices Jinx in the series, fans have to be ready for an emotionally devastating season 2 finale

Remember how we all cried our little black hearts out when Arcane season 1 ended on THAT cliffhanger? Forget about it: the upcoming second chapter is preparing an even worse finale for us. At least that's what Ella Purnell, the voice actress for Jinx, has teased recently.

Purnell said she herself cried — apparently, not because her character was tasked to do so, but purely because of how emotional the season 2 finale is going to be. The actress provided an update straight from the studio where she was completing the work on voicing Jinx in season 2.

"I actually just went back into the studio to complete some ADR [automated dialog replacement] for the season 2 finale – and I cried. So, I think other people will cry, too. It's devastating, and nobody will feel good after watching it," Purnell told TechRadar when promoting her newly-released show Fallout.

As if anyone felt good after watching the finale for the first season! Watch out for spoilers ahead.

How Did Arcane Season 1 End?

The first chapter of Arcane left us in a truly dark place. Vi and Jinx, the two estranged sisters on the opposing sides of the looming civil war in Piltover, never made peace with each other. In fact, Jinx ended the first season with a literal bang: having pushed her sister away, she went on to launch a missile straight into the Piltover council room where, ironically, a peace treaty was being forged.

We are yet to know the exact number and names of those who were killed by this strike (because it sure will be devastating for Piltover), but Purnell's update hints that season 2 will break out hearts even harder.

What Does Purnell's Update Mean For Arcane?

However, the fact that season 2 has a devastating ending might mean that things are not over for Arcane as a TV franchise. While Netflix is notorious for canceling even its most successful shows, it's clear that Arcane is unlikely to be among them: a sad finale for season 2 might as well mean that more seasons may be coming, because no one ends a franchise for good on a bad note... right?

The vast universe of League of Legends allows for many more stories to be adapted for television; moreover, even the creators admitted they saw themselves telling these stories "for the next 30 years."

However, Netflix and Riot are yet to officially confirm that the Arcane universe will be expanded beyond season 2 of the already iconic animated show.

The second season of Arcane is set to premiere in November 2024, with the exact release date to be announced later.
