Elite Fans, Meet Your New Obsession: 4 More Shows Just Like It
You thought Elite was addicting? Just wait until you dive into these.
The series is provocative in both its title and content. Its main character Otis is a socially awkward teenager who lives with his mother Dr. Jean Milburn, a nationally acclaimed sex expert.
She isn't ashamed of discussing even the most candid topics with her teenage son, so the boy becomes very well-versed in sex — though only in theory.
The knowledge he obtained from his mom comes in handy when one of the girls at school suggests that Otis start a counseling service to help their classmates deal with sex-related problems. Not surprisingly, their secret sex therapy clinic gains popularity among high school students who are naturally interested in sex and sexuality and have many burning questions to ask.
The Kids of Degrassi Street
Canada's legendary long-running TV series was released decades before the first streaming services emerged: The Kids of Degrassi Street is like Netflix 's Sex Education from the 1980s.
That was the first time teenagers appeared on TV screens addressing their own kind and speaking the same language as the audience. The series' main characters are school students living on the same street: they meet in class, discuss their lives and problems, try to solve them — though not always successfully — and learn from their mistakes.
The Kids of Degrassi Street was popular in Canada, and the following spin-off projects (quite a number of them) earned international success to the show and its creators. The story stretched over a couple of decades, and now, an HBO revival is in the works.
Netflix's idea was to use the teenage-spirited 1980s imagery and plot to appeal to older audiences — people who were in their teens three decades ago. But the original idea failed because Stranger Things turned out so good and captivating, it has garnered an army of fans consisting of teenagers, 40-somethings, and everyone in between.
VCRs, Toto and Duran Duran, and incredible teenage outfits — the numerous artifacts of the era and the matching soundtrack provide for an immersive journey into the 1980s. The gripping story is inspired by the work of Howard Lovecraft and Stephen King: it begins with a boy going missing, and his friends, investigating his disappearance, become convinced there are dark supernatural forces involved.
All elements combined, Stranger Things was destined to become a cult show — and the viewing numbers prove that it has succeeded.
The Wheel of Time
Amazon Prime's The Wheel of Time is an adaptation of Robert Jordan's novel series. While it's not clear whether the show will cover all 14 volumes of his work, the first season already proves it's going to be epic. A fantasy story driven forward by teenage main characters — isn't that the hit that's going to outdo Harry Potter , Lord of the Rings, Fantastic Beasts , and the like?
In a place with the mysterious name Emond's Meadow, three strangers appear. They try to protect three teenagers from Trollocs, warlike creatures who hunt them. The trio believes one of the teens is a reincarnation of the Dragon — a powerful being from a distant past, prophesied to save the civilization from destruction. In search of the truth, the team embarks on a long, arduous journey, where incredible adventures await them.
