Dylan O’Brien’s Most Rewatchable Sci-Fi Dystopia Reigns Over Netflix Top 10 Years After Release
You won’t escape from recalling this hit!
Summary:
- The 2014 science fiction movie, set in a unique futuristic location, explores the life of a society, created under the experiment of dystopia’s authorities.
- It mixes nail-biting plot, well-written characters and horrifying atmosphere.
- Being fairly recalled, it is now successfully climbing Netflix top.
Back in the early 2010’s, the Hunger Games fever swept over the whole world, with people of different generations becoming more interested in the fictional dystopian realities.
It was followed by the release of the Divergent action film in 2014, receiving mixed critical reviews. However, there is another movie with a similar premise that has taken the fifth place in Netflix’s Global Chart, so it’s safe to say that unlike Divergent, it still holds up today.
The dystopian story revolves around a teenage boy, who finds himself in an elevator with no memory of who he is and why he ended up in this place. He then acknowledges that he became a part of a rare experiment conducted on a group of young males, who were put in the center of a grass area enclosed by stone walls the same way he was.
Being left with no other choice, they are trying to survive there, establishing the inner society inside this place, which were named the Glade by its prisoners, and to learn not only the way towards freedom, but also the reason why they were put in this cage.
The plot of the movie is unique in its very concept and setting, as its events take place in a mysterious closed area with no way out from it. By showing the rules and the members of the forcibly created rudimentary society, this sci-fi film fantasizes about the dystopian future where the powerful elite can manipulate people to see how they can manage their lives in the obstacles of horrifying ignorance of nowhere.
Despite the outstanding characters who find themselves being toyed with like they’re lab rats, a significant role here is played by the setting facility itself. It turns out that outside the walls there is a huge ever-changing labyrinth surrounding the Glade residents.
Sci-fi fans can now guess that we’re talking about the 2014 action titled The Maze Runner, based on James Dashner's 2009 novel. It was a back-then great box office success and, besides, has become one of the most beloved dystopias of the 21st century.
Starring Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Thomas Brodie-Sangster, the movie was praised for Wes Ball’s direction, acting performances and its unique suspenseful tone.
You can dive into the world of the maze and to stream it on Netflix.
