Dumbledore Creating a Horcrux? Totally Could Happen, Fan Theory Says
What, you thought only Voldemort can do things like that? Not so fast.
Creating a Horcrux requires top-tier black magic, and in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, it is believed that only evil magicians would do something like that. Who would think that Professor Albus Dumbledore, who is considered undoubtedly kind and wise, would do such a thing?
Well, a hugely popular fan theory certainly does not rule that out. The theory does not label Dumbledore a secret dark wizard who was evil this entire time but rather argues that he could have created a horcrux accidentally in the wake of his sister Ariana's death.
We know that dark magic was used in the fight between him, Aberforth, and Grindelwald. It is also a fact that Dumbledore blamed himself for Ariana's death, so many fans believe that the sadness from the tragic occurrence may have split his soul and move a part of it into another object.
But what object? If anything, it would certainly be his beloved phoenix, Fawkes, the theory apologists believe. After all, if it worked for Voldemort and Nagini, why couldn't it work for Dumbledore and Hawkes?
However, even though the theory does sound quite plausible, it is one of the rare occasions when the author herself debunked it. When asked about the Dumbledore's horcrux theory on Twitter, J.K. Rowling was quick to note that "the idea that anybody believes this is strangely upsetting" to her.
So, no matter how badly one would want to believe that Voldemort was not the only one armed with horcruxes, it seems that Albus Dumbledore was definitely not the person who would try and prolong his life like that.
