This does not mean that the Academy has been forgiven.

Summary:

  • Despite being a fan favorite, Angela Bassett has lost the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2023 Academy Awards.
  • The actress admitted that she was extremely disappointed about her loss, but the topic has resurfaced in the opening episode of 911 season 7.
  • According to showrunner Tim Minear, the joke was approved by the actress.

To say that the Academy's preferences don't always align with what people think is best would be an understatement. To this day, many believe that the results of the Oscars are rigged, and that some of the nominated actors or films are prevented from properly campaigning.

No ceremony goes by without some major controversies, and if in 2024 the internet was furious that Emma Stone got an award instead of Lily Gladstone, in 2023 it was the same issue, but with Jamie Lee Curtis and Angela Bassett in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Even though justice was somewhat restored in 2024 with Angela Bassett receiving the honorary Oscar, many still feel that it wasn't enough and that the recognition the actress received was solely due to public pressure. Whether this is true or not, we will never know. However, Bassett's Oscar controversy has already made its way into pop culture.

911 Supporting Actress Joke

The show that dared to dig beneath Bassett's shocking loss was none other than 911, the procedural on which she has starred since the beginning. With its move from Fox, where it was canceled, to ABC, many thought it would see some changes, but if anything, 911 came back stronger and snarkier than ever.

If you were also shocked by the sheer audacity of calling out Angela Bassett with such a bold, yet admittedly funny, Best Supporting Actress joke, don't worry. Not only was it written by 911 showrunner Tim Minear, it was approved by the actress when she reviewed the script.

What can we say? Dealing with trauma by humor is one of those things we can all relate to. Minear explained how the joke was received by the actress in an interview with TVLine:

“When I wrote that line, it just made me laugh so hard. I thought, ‘How is she gonna take this?’ She read it and ran over to her husband and went, ‘Look what Tim wrote!’ She’s got a sense of humor about herself, which is one of the things I love about her.”

It wasn't just the joke that impressed viewers watching the premiere episode of 911 season 7. After being canceled by Fox because of a too big budget, the series seems to be experiencing a renaissance on ABC, getting bigger and more exciting than ever before. The only hope is that the drama doesn't double in size.

If you are hooked for the rest of the season, be sure to watch 911 on ABC every Thursday to make sure you do not miss an episode.
