Consider they were spared from more misery.

Every time the much-loved show comes to an end, the reviews become extremely controversial. The plot can be great, and the acting is usually up to par, but it is impossible to make a finale that satisfies every viewer at once. Some characters, couples, and relationships always get sacrificed in the process.

One of the concerns that the Sex Education fandom had about the final season 4 was the apparent absence of several characters that viewers had met during the series. Some are more beloved than others, and the finale felt rather empty without them. It was as disappointing for fans as it would be to not see your real-life friends at the prom.

Lily and Ola, the fan-favorite lesbian couple from seasons 2 and 3, were two of the characters left out of the party. Though the decision caused outrage in the fandom, series creator Laurie Nunn actually had an explanation ready. And as much as viewers hate to admit it, it's kind of wholesome and makes a lot of sense.

“I felt like the characters of Lily and Ola just really felt like they ended in a really happy place. Particularly because they're a lesbian couple, I wanted them to not have any more pain or trauma, and just be left happy together. So that felt like a very organic place to leave them,” Nunn commented to LADbible.

One question fans still have for the creators is why it was so impossible to show them living their best lives together in a happy relationship. Not only would that be a breath of fresh air in the never-ending drama of Otis' messy love life, but it would also give the couple a proper closure and the viewers a chance to say goodbye.

Whatever the reason for such a decision, it's not something anyone can change now.

Characters like Miss Sands, who played an important role in Maeve's life, or Simone Ashley's Olivia did not return for the final season. Although these characters were never central to the plot, their absence ruined the perception of the world in which the main characters exist.

Sex Education's final season 4 premiered on Netflix on September 21, so if you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, you can do so today.
