The chemistry between the two has been in the air since episode 1.

Warning: the following article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon episode 9

If you looked at Alicent and Rhaenyra and thought that the two behaved more like ex-lovers than ex-friends, then you might have an unexpected ally among the characters... and his name is Otto Hightower.

Don't get us wrong — Otto was very careful with his words of choice when he discussed with Alicent her relationships with Rhaenyra. However, that very choice of words prompted fans to believe that he might know something he doesn't say... yet.

Alicent's face when she heard the word "companion" also appears to be quite telling, with fans immediately deeming the scene as yet another hint at possible romantic subtext in the relationship between her and Rhaenyra.

Many fans who shipped Rhaenyra and Alicent from the first episode immediately hailed the scene as yet another piece of evidence. According to them, Otto just "called her a lesbian to her face".

Rhaenys Targaryen Could've Stopped the War With Just One Word in Episode 9

Still, the possibility of Alicent and Rhaenyra being more than friends has been quite vague in the show, although the actors have hinted that they did leave space for imagination when they developed the relationship between the two girls.

Some fans believe that the entire Targaryen civil war erupted because of Alicent being jealous of Rhaenyra — and not in a friendly way, but in a "I actually wanted to be with you instead of Viserys, but you chose to sleep with other guys and then marry them" way. This ambiguity remains one of the most intriguing thing about House of the Dragon.

The drama is set to go on as the first season is heading to its grand finale that is set to hit HBO Max on Sunday, October 23.
