If the phrase 'live-action Disney movie' makes you think about movie adaptations of their animated works, then congratulations, we fooled you.

Because live-action doesn't necessarily mean adaptation: every movie with live actors is a live-action one, and Disney produced lots of them throughout the studio's history, but these are the greatest.

Sure, Disney started as an animation studio, and for a long time they were mainly known for their animated movies, but that never stopped them from producing live-action ones even in the '60s. You surely know some of them; you just didn't think that they were made by Disney.

And one thing that these live-action movies have in common with the animated works of Disney is the story: it's cohesive, entertaining, has carefully placed twists and surprises that don't seem too uncalled for, and it always has some grand idea behind it that it tries to channel to their audiences — and succeeds perfectly.

Mary Poppins tells us to be a bit freer and have a little magic in our lives; Maleficent shows the perspective of a so-called villain and makes us think about different points of view; The Princess Diaries and Freaky Friday teach us acceptance, and so on.

Here's the list of all the movies mentioned here: National Treasure (2004), Remember the Titans (2000), Cruella (2021), Maleficent (2014), Mary Poppins (1964), Freaky Friday (2003), The Parent Trap (1998), 101 Dalmatians (1996), Enchanted (2007), The Princess Diaries (2001).
