We almost wish the creators could take that reference back.

The first two seasons of Bridgerton have proven that Queen Charlotte is one of the show's best-developed characters, and her solo spinoff will certainly add to that impression. In the main series, we see Charlotte as a powerful and flighty ruler who is dying of boredom.

This sense of stagnation leads the queen to jump into all the social events, gossip, and scandals, which often proves to be a threat to the main characters. However, Charlotte's character is not so simple.

In the scenes with her husband, King George III, the Queen appears in a very different light. It is clear that the spouses love each other even after many years together, but the King's mental decline prevents them from spending time together.

And judging by the official trailer for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, just released by Netflix, the spinoff will make their story even more heartbreaking.

The prequel will focus on young Charlotte's rise to power and her romance with King George. The trailer leaves no room for interpretation, their love story will be steamy in the best Bridgerton fashion.

At one point, the video shows a quick shot of a hot sex scene as George passionately wipes the table breaking dishes to make out with Charlotte. And while this scene screams raunchy, fans noticed one devastating detail about it. This moment is actually a reference to a Bridgerton Season 1 scene involving a dining room table.

The scene shows the aged and already ailing George in a calm and lucid state that allows him to have a normal conversation with Charlotte.

But the King seems lost in time, and when Charlotte explains that their daughter, Amelia, died several years earlier, he has a violent outburst and accuses his wife of murdering Amelia while sweeping the dishes off the table in front of him.

That's how their love story becomes cyclical. What began with breaking dishes out of passionate love ends with breaking dishes out of anger and madness.

When fans discovered this reference, it broke many fandom hearts. Somehow, seeing the perfect beginning of the romantic storyline seems to make the devastating ending even more tragic. The fans will have the chance to meet the lucid and handsome George and the charming young Charlotte on May 4th on Netflix.
