Despite 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Garfield Movie Is Already a $91M Box Office Hit
For the worst that everyone expected, it’s actually quite a big milestone.
It’s been only four days since a controversial animated film The Garfield Movie starring Chris Pratt ( or rather his voice) got its theatrical release, and its opening weekend results are driving everyone insane, mostly due to a big misunderstanding.
The movie was indeed very lucky to be released ahead of the 4-day-long Memorial Day Weekend and according to the most recent data, has already grossed around $91 million worldwide, which is so far a much better result than any other big film of this year showed.
What Is The Garfield Movie About?
Based on Jim Davis’ comic book character, lazy and grumpy cat Garfield, The Garfield Movie follows the same feline who this time gets a chance to reunite with his long-lost father, Vic.
Unlike his son who is living his best life surrounded by his owner’s love and everything he could ever wish for, including his favorite meal of all times lasagna, Vic is a stray cat who never got even close to what Garfield is used to in his everyday life.
Though the latter still feels hurt by his father’s decision to abandon him when Garfield was a kitten, he nonetheless embarks on a whole new adventure with Vic, and that will surely bring them both a lot of trouble.
Even with all the money that The Garfield Movie brought to its creators’ piggy bank within only 4 days, its results are still pretty much polarizing. The film doesn’t seem to have any problem with the viewers judging by the box office success and a solid score of 83% the movie received from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes.
Meanwhile, things aren’t that easy with the critics who panned the film even before its theatrical release, giving it a mediocre score of 38%.
Most of them noted that The Garfield Movie isn’t actually about Garfield at all, but rather about some other cat whose behavior isn’t even close to what the most famous cartoon feline is like.
According to several early reviews, many heavily criticized the film that opted for an action-packed storyline for a lazy and grumpy cat who would in reality do anything to never leave his house with a soft couch and constantly served lasagna.
Despite all the harsh criticism, the movie still seems to be doing well in the box office top as more and more moviegoers are likely to enjoy it.
The Garfield Movie is now playing in theaters across the US.
