The fan-favorite movie franchise is losing its biggest competitive edge in Ryan Reynolds's improv as the WGA strike turns the Merc With a Mouth into Just a Merc.

Deadpool 's become a massive hit for many reasons. For starters, it's the only big Marvel installment with strong language, adult jokes, shattered fourth wall, and on-screen brutality.

You won't see Doctor Strange literally rip his enemies apart while drunkenly ranting about his ex to the audience, will you? And Deadpool can do that.

Targeting an older audience is not the sole reason for the franchise's overwhelming success, though.

One of the major factors in the lead actor, Ryan Reynolds, and the way he turns his character into the viewers' best buddy and the bad guys' worst nightmare — both in terms of combat and in terms of sh*t-talking on the go.

The latest part, despite Reynolds being one of Deadpool's writers, is largely non-scripted.

While most of the banter is written prior to shooting a scene, the actor famously comes up with many of his best jokes as he goes, and this only makes the movies feel more fun: other actors' reactions are often genuine as they're not prepared for sudden improv at a random given moment.

For Deadpool 3, this situation is dramatically different, and we're about to witness the first Deadpool entry with zero improvisation from Ryan Reynolds whatsoever.

The reason for that is the Writer's Guild of America's strike that's currently ongoing.

Since Reynolds is one of the movies' writers, he's also a part of the Guild, and he's affected by its latest strike-affected policy that specifically prohibits writers like him to make any changes to the script — which basically kills the improvisation completely.

Under the current strike rules, only non-writer directors and producers are allowed to make some tiny adjustments to their movies' scripts — and it's too late for Reynolds to back out since he's already confirmed to be a Deadpool 3 writer.

This effectively means that he'll have to stick to the script no matter what even if he has the funniest ideas pop up in his head while shooting a scene.

The Merc With a Mouth was downgraded to Just a Merc, and this is a massive bummer for the movie: Ryan Reynolds' improvs have always provided the best jokes and running gags, and the third Deadpool entry is bound to feel different from the previous ones.

It's still going to be great, most likely, but far less fun.
