Deadpool 3 Director's New Update Reveals Massive Continuity Error in Upcoming Movie
Shawn Levy revealed that the events of 2017's Logan are still canon, which raises the question of how Wolverine returned from beyond the grave.
Summary:
- 2017's Logan was the perfect bittersweet grand finale for the character, leaving many fans in tears
- Deadpool 3 will not retcon the events of Logan, as the director revealed that it is still canon
- This leads to a massive continuity error that would be extremely difficult to explain
The 2017 superhero drama Logan was promoted as a grand finale for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, as the actor has been portraying the character since the first X-Men movie that was released in 2000, and since then Logan has become completely inseparable from the man who plays him.
And the movie fully delivered what it promised, being an incredibly heartfelt and bittersweet end of the road for the hero, who finally met his demise while protecting his surrogate daughter Laura, portrayed by Dafne Keen.
It was an epic finale and the end of an era for many fans, as Jackman finally retired from playing Wolverine after 17 years... or so everyone thought.
An Unexpected Return
The third Deadpool movie was eagerly awaited by fans, as many suspected that it would become a bridge between the X-Men movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the humorous nature of the character, who constantly breaks the fourth wall, made Deadpool 3 the perfect project to finally do so.
That turned out to be true, but an even bigger surprise came when it was revealed that Jackman would be returning to the role of Wolverine after a rather long hiatus, much to the excitement of fans who had been mourning the then seemingly lost opportunity to see two heroes team up on the big screen.
Now, the film's director, Shawn Levy, has shared an intriguing detail about his upcoming project in an interview with BroBible that appears to create a continuity error in the on-screen history of Wolverine.
Levy expressed his deep admiration for the work of James Mangold (the director of Logan), and explicitly stated that Deadpool 3 is not attempting to retcon the character's history, as the events of the 2017 movie remain canon.
Given that the X-Men movies have already changed established events with the time travel shenanigans that were the focus of 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past, many fans thought that the events of Logan took place in a different timeline, but Levy was pretty clear: "Logan is canon. That happened."
Deadpool 3 Will Be a Challenge For The Writers
This means that the writers of Deadpool 3 had a pretty tough challenge to face, as the easiest way to include Wolverine in the story would have been to make it an alternate version of the character.
But now we'll apparently see how Logan not only managed to return from beyond the grave, but also why he looks significantly younger (or at least in better shape) than his version from the 2017 film, which is immediately apparent from the on-set photos.
The fact that the hero is finally wearing his iconic, comic book-accurate suit for the first time in more than two decades since he first appeared on the big screen also begs for an explanation, as it looks like something the bitter and exhausted Logan of 2017 would never have done.
With all that in mind, the movie's writing team had to come up with a really convincing way to bring the character into the story in a natural way that doesn't undermine the epic finale we saw in Logan.
For now, Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released on May 3, 2024, but various sources, including the director himself, say that the movie could be pushed back to another date.
