A new spinoff of the iconic TV series ended up surpassing everyone's expectations and far exceeding the finale of the original show.

The Walking Dead has become infamous for how unnecessarily drawn out it has become over the years, with fans complaining that the show has been kept on life support until its final season was finally released.

And with several spin-offs failing to bring anything new to the table, the announcement of The Walking Dead: Dead City was met with skepticism by fans, even though it looked more promising than its predecessors.

So it came as quite a surprise when, with the release of the first episode of the spin-off series, it was clear that Dead City was indeed the breath of fresh air that fans had been waiting for.

In addition, according to Variety, it became the biggest premiere ever on AMC Plus, surpassing even the last season of the original series that held the record. It also became the most-watched new cable drama of the year.

And it seems to have earned it, as even fans who stopped watching the show some time ago but decided to give the spinoff a chance say that it doesn't feel confusing and that they love the story and the new characters so far.

All things considered, it seems that Dead City may be the first sign of The Walking Dead returning to its exciting roots. After all, the trailer reminded many fans of the first season, considered by many to be the best, with its big city setting and zombies that were actually a threat.

While there's a chance that it won't hold up in the long run, it seems pretty decent for now, and raises hopes for another upcoming spinoff revolving around Daryl Dixon, which is also set to premiere this year.

The Walking Dead: Dead City episode 3 will premiere on July 2, 2023.
