We all expected Death, but this cameo was definitely a treat.

Summary:

  • Dead Boy Detectives is The Sandman spinoff that quickly climbed up Netflix 's global top
  • Despite a different tone and a more humorous approach, Dead Boy Detectives is already hailed by some as an even better take on Neil Gaiman 's universe
  • In the beginning of the show, one of the Endless siblings, Death, has made a predictable but still great appearance
  • Another Endless sibling also showed up later, setting up an eerie prospect for a second season

For us The Sandman fans who yearned for a second season of Neil Gaiman's most enigmatic TV project, Dead Boy Detectives was a life-saver. The new Netflix show that follows the adventures of two ghosts who prefer solving supernatural mysteries to enjoying their afterlife is a fantastic addition to the already rich universe of The Sandman.

The spinoff somehow manages to be very similar and very different to its parent show at the same time. Despite the shared universe and the general The Sandman-esque vibe, Dead Boy Detectives is much more light-hearted and, if we may, fun.

Still, it was a real treat for fans to go full "meme Dicaprio" mode when they saw literally anything — or anyone — directly from The Sandman. The first Endless cameo awaited us right in the first episode, when Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death arrived to collect a soul and Charles and Edwin had to escape the sound of her wings.

But the second one was a lot less predictable — and thus far more enjoyable, as many fans say.

Dead Boy Detectives Did Despair More Justice Than The Sandman Ever Could

That's right, Donna Preston's Despair was the second Endless cameo, appearing in the seventh episode of Dead Boy Detectives in the middle of Charles and Edwin's trip to Hell.

Edwin first saw her in his own mirror reflection, only for the mirror to suddenly turn into a portkey that transported him right into Despair's realm. That's where the most overlooked Endless sibling yet had her spooky moment to shine — and fans were left in awe.

"I’ve seen a lot of people who were less than thrilled with her appearance in Sandman say that they love the scene in DBD, and I’m fully in agreement there too. I can see her being some kind of presence hanging around in Edwin’s life going forward, even if not a full blown antagonist per se," Redditor genericxinsight said.

Are Edwin and Despair Connected Now?

Before sending Edwin off, Despair told him they were friends now and said she'll call him whenever she needed him — whatever on Earth that creepy promise means. Well, many fans believe that this could be a perfect set-up for Dead Boy Detectives season 2 — as well as for the second chapter of The Sandman, where Despair was seen plotting with Desire against Dream.

For Edwin, who has already found himself in a pretty weird situationship with the Cat King, this could result in a pretty challenging new arc. Learning to accept his queer identity, confessing love to his best friend, being through Hell for a second time, and losing Niko, Edwin is way too vulnerable at the hands of Despair.

More Endless Can Appear in Dead Boy Detectives Season 2

Besides, many people are already calling for Desire, Despair's twin, to appear in the second season (after all, Edwin is pining for someone who won't reciprocate...). It helps that showrunner Steve Yockey has already teased they would love to "rope in" Desire if Dead Boy Detectives gets renewed for a second season.

So far, there has been no official information on the renewal. But Dead Boy Detectives does sit comfortably on #3 in Netflix global top, so maybe, given the popularity of its parent show, the renewal is only a question of time.
