DC's James Gunn Makes His First Official Comment about New Superman Casting
“Who will become the new Superman?” is the question that has every DC fan on the edge of their seat. After a long period of silence, James Gunn finally gave an update.
James Gunn ’s out there doing God’s work reshaping and completely rebooting the DC Universe. As the new co-CEO of DC Studios, the director has undertaken a massive project — but so far, it seems like Gunn has everything under control. The director recently revealed the first steps of his DCU, and it has everyone hyped.
The first full-blown movie in the DCU is going to be Superman: Legacy and Gunn couldn’t have chosen a better movie to pump up the anticipation. Ever since the co-CEO of DC Studios announced that he was going to recast almost every superhero for the new Universe, fans have been dying to learn any news on that.
Everyone’s especially interested in who will take over the two most iconic DC superheroes: Batman and Superman. With the latter’s solo movie marking the start of the new era of DC, the hype is all too real — and the news about the currently undergoing auditions for the part is only fanning the flames of fans’ curiosity.
Gunn himself promised to stay mute on the matter, and he’s been keeping his word for a pretty long time. But recently, the director gave the first official update on the new Superman and its casting on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast.
"Now that we've kind of done a lot of auditions, we're narrowing it down. We're not done yet. By the way — there's a lot of stories out there about who we're auditioning and all these screen tests. I'm just saying it's not all true, that's for sure," said Gunn.
This is a rather peculiar statement. Its direct meaning is obvious: the auditions for Superman are still going, and while there are few candidates left, the final decision has not been made just yet.
But the implications are more interesting. James Gunn is famous for bashing any and all false rumors about his movies, but this time, he didn’t say that all of the recent scoops were bullsh*t (which he typically does).
A few days ago, the insiders revealed that three actors made it to the final screen tests: David Corenswet, Tom Brittney, and Nicholas Hoult.
Admittedly, one of them will become the new Superman, and this scoop blew up big time — there’s no way Gunn didn’t have it in his mind while addressing the rumors on the podcast.
We’re not claiming that this information is 100% true, but it just became all the more likely to turn out correct in our eyes. After all, this is as far as “getting details out of James Gunn” goes these days.
