David Harbour Thought Nobody Would Watch 'Stranger Things'

'Stranger Things ' is an undisputed Netflix hit, with the story now on track to crescendo in the fifth and final season after the previous one left thousands of fans across the world emotional and invested.

But it wasn't always that way. For instance, David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper, was initially thinking that nobody would even watch 'Stranger Things' when he began filming the first season.

Oh, the good old times!

"I remember when we were shooting the first season down in Atlanta, Netflix had given us a budget of about $20," Harbour said during his appearance on BBC The One Show on Monday. "Halfway through I remember my hair person coming up to me, about episode four we were shooting, and she was like "I don't think it's gonna work". I was like "what!" so by the time we wrapped up filming I thought we wouldn't get a second season. [...] We thought no one would watch it and it was gonna be a disaster."

Instead of becoming the first Netflix's show to never get a second season, 'Stranger Things' propelled to global fame and fan love. Now, the show has a superpower to cause nostalgia for the times you never lived in and revive the songs that were popular back in the 80s by just including them in the soundtrack.

Despite Harbour's initial lack of confidence in the show's future, it would seem that a lot of 'Stranger Things' fans are still in love with the original version of his Jim Hopper that debuted in the first season.

Harbour's character, like the rest of the cast, has changed throughout the years, evolving from the grumpy and bulky local cheriff who lost his family into a dedicated and passionately protective man who managed to find a new love in Joyce Hopper – now canonically his boo.
