Dark Knight Failed Casting Opportunity Robbed Us of a Perfect Jim Gordon
Kurt Russell was almost cast as Commissioner James "Jim" Gordon in the Batman film series directed by Christopher Nolan.
Christopher Nolan 's The Dark Knight trilogy is known for its dark and gritty depiction of Batman and compelling storylines exploring the psychological depths of characters and their relationships with one another. The films were highly praised by both viewers and critics for the stellar performances of its cast, including Christian Bale as Batman, Heath Ledger as the Joker, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, and other talented actors.
After many years of fans' love and overall success, the casting for The Dark Knight trilogy seems perfect thanks to the strong performances of the main actors, the chemistry between them, and their ability to bring characters to life on screen. Turns out, fans of The Dark Knight trilogy were robbed of an opportunity to see a very different Commissioner Gordon.
Nolan originally offered the role to Kurt Russell, but the famous actor turned it down. The role eventually went to Gary Oldman, who did a great job playing Jim Gordon. However, this choice was not Nolan's first, second, or even third. After Russell turned down his offer, Nolan approached Chris Cooper. The actor also declined the part due to the time commitment required for the film. Then, Dennis Quaid was considered for the role but the deal also fell through.
As a result, Nolan cast Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, and Oldman received critical and audience acclaim for his performance in the trilogy. In fact, Oldman's portrayal of Gordon was so highly regarded that it was rumored that Zack Snyder did not include the character in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice out of fear of not being able to surpass Oldman's portrayal. J.K. Simmons, who was later cast as Commissioner Gordon in the DC Extended Universe, had a tough act to follow.
In the Batman canon, Commissioner Gordon is a central character and one of Batman's most trusted allies. He serves as a mentor and ally to the Dark Knight, often providing him with information and resources in his fight against crime in Gotham City.
It remains unknown how Kurt Russell's Jim Gordon would turn out, but it would definitely be interesting to watch The Dark Knight trilogy starring the world-famous actor along with Russel pulling off Gordon's iconic mustache.
