Here’s what happens when the soap spills onto real lives.

It's easy to see why audiences are drawn to soap operas. They seem relatable and realistic on the surface, but the deeper you get into the plot, the more unexpected twists you see. From unexpected twin revelations to people coming back from the dead, soap operas do things that no other genre can afford to do.

The other thing is that soap operas tend to be very long and easy to follow. With some of the content coming your way every day, there's no time to get bored or stuck in a long hiatus, which happens to your nighttime dramas.

One thing that is almost expected in a soap is the change of actors. Whether they leave of their own accord or are forced to for the sake of a storyline, the exits of actors are usually very mundane and peaceful. However, one Young and the Restless star from the '80s claims her story is very different.

Brenda Dickson originated the role of Jill Foster Abbott on the show back in 1973, and she has been the fan-favorite actress for this particular soap ever since. However, her stay on the show was interrupted by a sudden exit that was followed by a lawsuit against the show's former producer at the time, William Joseph Bell.

In the suit, the actress claimed that Bell had ruined her career by blacklisting her, leaving her jobless and broke.

However, the details of the scandal only came to light years later, in 2013, when the actress, who had risen to fame in the '70s, released her memoir, My True Hidden Hollywood Story. According to the book and the commentary the actress gave to the New York Post, she was finally "fighting back."

While it's impossible to verify all of the horrific details the actress lists in the book, including the alleged affair they had, her being broke and homeless after leaving the show, and Bell sending an entire mob cartel after her, some of the facts are true.

Considering the success Dickson had before the alleged split with Bell, it's hard to believe that she suddenly found herself without any roles at all without someone influencing her to do so.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what happens when soap spills over from the show into real life, and it can be very damaging for everyone involved. The good news is that Brenda Dickson's legacy on The Young and the Restless will live on forever.

If you want to see the actress in action as the iconic villain Jill Foster Abbott, you can stream the early seasons on CBS Online.
