Damsel and 9 Other Most Anticipated Movies Coming in Spring 2024
It was worth waiting for the spring just because of these premieres.
The spring 2024 movie season began with a triumph – Dune: Part Two was released on March 1st.
But the next three months are rich with other high-profile premieres – from the Mad Max prequel to another future hit starring Zendaya.
1. Damsel
Release Date: March 8
Elodie marries a handsome prince. It seems that only "happily ever after" awaits her now. But it soon becomes clear that she has fallen into a trap. The royal family allowed Elodie into their home only to sacrifice her to the dragon.
Now the young lady must fight the beast and free herself from captivity. No one is in a hurry to save the princess, which means Elodie has to do it herself.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's film will apparently turn the popular "damsel in distress" trope on its head.
2. Challengers
Release Date: April 26
The story revolves around a once famous tennis player who is depressed. Hoping to somehow improve the situation, his wife and part-time coach signs him up for the Challenger tournament, where his opponent turns out to be his wife's ex-lover.
Challengers was supposed to open the Venice Film Festival in 2023, but due to a strike by the actors' guild, the film's release had to be postponed until the spring of 2024. Apparently, what we should expect from the movie is not a sports drama, but a complicated story of a love triangle.
3. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Release Date: May 24
Eight years ago, Mad Max: Fury Road won six Oscars and the love of millions. Now, a prequel to the post-apocalyptic action movie is being released that tells the coming-of-age story of Furiosa, the heroine previously played by Charlize Theron.
The actress was originally slated to return to the role, with director George Miller planning to de-age the star using computer graphics. But in the end, it was decided to cast Anya Taylor-Joy as the young Furiosa.
4. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Release Date: March 22
In 2021, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a sequel to the iconic 1980s franchise, was released. Recently, remakes and reboots of all kinds have become a big part of the movie industry, often causing controversial reactions from viewers. But with Ghostbusters the situation is a little different – Jason Reitman, the son of the creator of two original parts, was responsible for the movie.
The second chapter will take place in New York, where the first Ghostbusters worked in the 1980s. The main villain will be an ancient force that could cause a new ice age. Two generations of Ghostbusters must unite to save the world.
5. Road House
Release Date: March 21
The remake of 1989's Road House has already caused a scandal: despite the terms of the deal, director Doug Liman is outraged that the action movie is bypassing theaters and going straight to Prime Video.
The movie tells the story of former UFC fighter Dalton (Jake Gyllenhaal ), who gets a job as a bouncer in a provincial Florida bar. The movie is even more interesting not because of the participation of the pumped up Gyllenhaal, but because of the acting debut of the real UFC fighter Conor McGregor.
6. The Fall Guy
Release Date: May 3
Stuntman Colt must return to his job to help his ex-girlfriend Jody shoot her first movie. But things don't go as planned when the star of the project disappears without a trace. Now Colt has to find the missing actor. And maybe, after such a feat, Colt will get a chance to reunite with his loved one.
The Fall Guy is a movie by David Leitch, the man who gave the world Atomic Blonde and John Wick. Leitch himself used to be a stunt double for Brad Pitt, and the director's upcoming film will most likely reveal the inner workings of the profession.
7. Immaculate
Release Date: March 22
Sydney Sweeney is gradually becoming a big Hollywood star, but 2024 began with a failure for her – Madame Web became a black mark on the filmographies of several talented actresses at once.
Immaculate is the new horror from Michael Mohan, with whom Sweeney worked on the controversial thriller The Voyeurs. It tells the story of an Italian nun who mysteriously becomes pregnant.
The Church is already announcing a new miracle, but the girl becomes more convinced every day that she is not carrying the Messiah, but the Antichrist.
8. Love Lies Bleeding
Release Date: March 8
The film from Rose Glass and Studio A24 conquered first Sundance and then the Berlinale. You can see it in theaters very soon – it will be released on March 8.
Jackie (Katie O'Brian) dreams of winning the American bodybuilding championship and arrives in a small American town lost somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. While training at a local gym, she is immediately noticed by Lou (Kristen Stewart ), the gym manager. She gets a job with Lou's father, a crime boss and arms dealer.
9. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Release Date: March 29
Godzilla and Kong have gone underground, settling in the world of the giant monsters. But they must face an ancient force that can destroy both the Titans and humans. This movie will reveal the origins of the giant creatures and the secrets of Skull Island.
The latest films in the MonsterVerse franchise didn’t have a deeply developed plot. But fans love the world of Godzilla and Kong for something else. In the new installment, fans will probably expect another triumph of CGI and large-scale battles between giant monsters. And sometimes you don't need more.
10. Civil War
Release Date: April 12
In the near future, a civil war breaks out in the United States. A small group of journalists travels the country to document the historical changes and interview the last president of a disappearing state.
Civil War is the most expensive film in A24's history – the studio invested $50 million in the film. Viewers can expect a mix of political thriller and social drama. The cast is led by Kirsten Dunst, who plays one of the war correspondents.
