Dahmer Victim's Mom Blasts Evan Peters' Golden Globe Win as Dangerous
Peters' portrayal of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer for Netflix secured him a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series, but also sparked some controversy.
Evan Peters' big night on Tuesday's Golden Globes ceremony appeared to have added to the traumatic experience of people who are most affected by the actions of the character he portrayed in Netflix series about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
In the wake of Peter's Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series win, mother of one Dahmer victim, could not remain silent. Shirley, the mother of Tony Hughes who was slain by the Milwaukee Monster in 1991, told TMZ that recognition of Peters' portrayal of the serial killer could be dangerous.
"There's a lot of sick people around the world, and people winning acting roles from playing killers keeps the obsession going and this makes sick people thrive on the fame," the woman told the outlet.
No matter how good Peters' performance was, many fans are siding with the victim's mother. According to fans, the critical acclaim and artistic value of the Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story doesn't matter, and Peters' Golden Globe nod is "incredibly disrespectful."
"The show should've never been made. Also Evan Peters definitely deserved to win for his other stuff not this," said Twitter user ally_gp6.
Some people, however, believe that the actor understood that his Golden Globe victory would cause a lot of controversy online — maybe this is why, fans suggest, Peters "looked so sad" when he was receiving the award. Others argued that pictures and videos of Peters from the ceremony do not look "sad or remorseful at all."
Dahmer: Monster quickly became one of the platform's biggest hits, mounting over 5 billions of hours watched as of early December. The success made sure that Dahmer was turned into an anthology series despite the controversy that the show has sparked on social media and among the families of the victims.
