Daez fans are not few in the Blue Bloods fandom. But will their voices outweigh Donnie Wahlberg's?

Summary

  • The potential for a romance between Danny and Baez has long been a hotly debated topic among Blue Bloods fans.
  • Donnie Wahlberg, who plays Danny, is not sure if this pairing is a good idea because they would have to interact less.
  • However, this option could work in the final episodes and give fans a long-awaited sigh of relief.

Despite its setting, Blue Bloods has enough heartbreaking moments because it is first and foremost a family drama in which law enforcement officers try to stay afloat by finding solace in each other — after all, the entire plot is based on the interaction of members of the Reagan family.

Thus, many viewers are pondering the potential for a romantic relationship to develop between two fan favorites, Danny Reagan and Maria Baez. With the final season premiering in just over a week, we'll have to wait and see if the writers have heeded the wishes of some fans to make these two more than just partners.

Except that Danny actor himself, Donnie Wahlberg, sees Daez as an unnecessary plot twist that will ruin the dynamic between the two longtime friends. Still, maybe this isn't the worst fanservice way to end a show that's been running for almost 14 years?

Wahlberg's Take on the Fan-Favorite Pairing

The development of the romance between Danny and Baez has been a controversial topic since they became partners in Season 3. Some viewers feel that the chemistry between the two is so strong that it's ridiculous to ignore it, even though they are fellow police detectives. Others, however, feel that such a pairing is inappropriate for the storyline, as it would violate not only their professional ethics, but also their friendship.

But no matter how heated the debate, the opinions of the cast members themselves should never be overlooked. After all, in the nearly 14 years of the show's existence, the actors have come to understand their characters more deeply than perhaps even some of the writers themselves. Donnie Wahlberg, for example, feels that Danny Reagan and Maria Baez should remain professional partners, otherwise it would greatly affect the development of the story if they had to interact less on screen.

'If they [Danny and Baez] start a relationship, we won't have scenes together, and then I'll miss my friend,' Wahlberg told The Talk. The actor compared the situation to when Jamie Reagan (Will Estes), after getting close to and then marrying Eddie Janko (Vanessa Ray), had to find a new partner and their scenes with Eddie virtually ceased, except for family dinners.

Daez Might Be a Good Option for the Finale

But he said that in 2021. Now, with the Season 14 finale coming up, the situation may be different. It might be valid to give the fans some fan service without contradicting what Donnie said. The solution might be to bring them closer together in the final episode of the season: yes, in theory, Danny and Baez will no longer be detective partners, but the actors won't have to worry about not being able to work together on stage.

Plot-wise, though, Baez has long since become part of the Reagan family, as evidenced by Danny inviting her to a family dinner in Season 11.

Nevertheless, while the show would hardly have suffered if Danny and Baez had become more than just professional partners in the finale, giving fans a satisfying conclusion and something to chew on, some stories don't need to be based on romance at all. Sometimes it is the emphasis on romantic feelings that spoils the whole experience and even the quality of the script, as friendly relationships can be just as fascinating and deep.

Well, we'll see what the writers come up with soon enough as Season 14 premieres on CBS on February 16, 2024 at 10pm ET.
