Coup de Chance May Be The Last Woody Allen Film Ever
But there’s still a little hope for more.
Judging by the public reaction to the premiere of Woody Allen ’s Coup de Chance at the Venice Film Festival, people do not hold any grudge against the filmmaker even after the allegations against him spread out across the web.
Whether that is older forms of media, like magazines, or social media posts, it doesn’t seem to hold enough weight to bring a celebrity director down. Judging by the immediate audience reaction, it also didn’t affect the quality of the project itself.
While the director brushes off the topic of cancel culture and doesn’t admit himself to being canceled, he still thinks that this might be the right time for retirement.
As Allen opened up in an interview with Variety, he’s always wanted a chance to become a French filmmaker, rather than a New York one.
Now, with one Parisian masterpiece under his belt, and a beautiful number of 50 in filmography, it may be the time to step down, he believes. The retirement thoughts have more to do with the logistics and financial backing of any large production, rather than with the actual creative process:
“I have so many ideas for films that I would be tempted to do it if it was easy to finance. But beyond that, I don’t know if I have the same verve to go out and spend a lot of time raising money,” 87-year-old Allen said.
One can’t help but wonder, whether the financing issues actually do have anything to do with Allen becoming a person non-grata for many major entertainment industry holdings. It always was a struggle for an independent film, especially when it involves an overseas production, but there surely is some interference.
Venice Film Festival aside, Coup de Chance is set to premiere in France on September 27, 2023.
Woody Allen’s romantic thriller story has gathered a 78% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 9 reviews. As of today, it’s too early to predict if the film will be considered a commercial success, but if that is the case, it would only increase the chances of Allen’s retirement.
